The Subaru BRZ: The Evolution of Engineering

There’s one class in high school that future Subaru employees took seriously: Physics. The apple fell, Newton’s Cradle eventually stopped, but Subaru engineers kept pushing until they defined their own laws of physics and redefined how an affordable sports coupe should handle.

An elephant, an iceberg, that last pin on the bowling lane-are all things that seemingly can’t be knocked over; now the Subaru BRZ can be added to that list. By giving the 2013 BRZ one of the lowest centers of gravity in a vehicle on the market today, Subaru gave drivers a chance to experience complete stability and control on the road.

After gliding through the curves of the road the first time behind the wheel, drivers of the BRZ will find themselves highlighting all the, swerving roads on their navigation system for later. Powered by a 2.0-liter, 200 horsepower BOXER engine, there’s no teeter tottering around in the BRZ. Stability flows through the vehicle naturally thanks to the control and symmetry of its front-engine, rear-wheel drivetrain layout.

Don’t expect Subaru to sacrifice control for power either. As nimble as your favorite receiver, the BRZ jukes through curves with pinpoint precision while the rear-wheel drive provides the ultimate steering response in this affordable exotic. Hug miles and miles of curves, turn around and do it again with an estimated 22 miles per gallon city and 30 highway on premium fuel.

Producing a zippy sports car with a MSRP starting at $25,495, optimal balance and one of the lowest centers of gravity in its class seems like more than enough, but Subaru engineers didn’t want to let the BRZ lag in any category, especially safety. Known for its high safety standards, Subaru equipped the BRZ with driver and passenger seat airbags, front fog lights, side curtain airbags, stability control, tire pressure monitoring and traction control. In addition to these, Subaru’s ring-shaped reinforcement frame is designed to shield and protect in a collision, directing impact energy around the passenger compartment, instead of through it.

While the BRZ is accommodating enough for drivers of all skill levels and affordable enough for most budgets, not everyone will be able to get their hands behind the wheel of one.
