Safety normally doesn’t look this cool. It’s usually cluttered with kneepads, helmets and other padding. Safety gets such an ugly and bulky rap that you’d never expect something as sleek and beautiful like the 2013 Nissan Altima to also be a top safety pick. But Nissan is working hard to show Americans that safe can still be stylish after winning “Top Safety Pick Plus” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
This specific award is based on the vehicle’s performance in 5 different passenger safety tests: front, side, rollover, rear crash and the newly added small overlap frontal test.
This award from the IIHS was given in addition to the 5-star safety rating that the 2013 Altima received last September. The five-star rating means that during an accident, passengers in this vehicle have a 10% or less chance of being injured. These odds are backed by more than 11 safety features that come standard in this critically-acclaimed vehicle. While it wasn’t the reason Christian Solso, a Star Nissan customer, purchased his 2013 Altima, the high safety rating does make him feel better.
“No, I didn’t know that, but that’s good since I have two kids,” he says after finding out about the 2013 Altima’s new safety award. A few seconds later, two small children ran into the Star Nissan service waiting room with a big hug for their dad, Christan Solso.
Aside from safety, Christian’s favorite features is its excellent gas mileage. With an estimated 38 MPG highway, the ever-fluctuating gas prices are just one other thing Christian won’t have to worry about while driving his 2013 Altima.
